Splitgate PlayStation Popularity Increased After Halo Infinite Launch

1047 Games’ chief executive officer Ian Proulx has claimed that Splitgate‘s player base on PlayStation platforms increased following the launch of Halo Infinite. Inspired by the likes of Portal and Halo, Splitgate became an instant hit when its beta launched on consoles in summer 2021. Such is its popularity that 1047 Games has indefinitely delayed Splitgate‘s full launch to ensure that it’s stable enough to handle a mass influx of players.

Speaking to The Loadout (via Video Games Chronicle), Proulx said that he’s glad Halo Infinite is out because he believes both Splitgate and the critically-acclaimed Microsoft-exclusive will help draw more people into the arena shooter genre. “I think that there’s just so much noise and so many battle royales right now, and [these two games] are bringing people over to the arena shooter genre,” Proulx said. “You know, there’s a lot of kids who have never played Halo, right? There’s a lot of kids who have never played Quake or Unreal Tournament. They’ve never played this kind of game. And getting them exposure to that I think is just a good thing for the genre as a whole.”

What’s Next for Splitgate?

In its new year’s message, 1047 Games teased “a lot” of surprises and “cool stuff” for Splitgate in 2022. The studio is also toying with the idea of a Halo-style single-player campaign and has received enough funding to continue its development efforts while hiring industry veterans to expand its team.

In other news, former Call of Duty developer Robert Bowling has said that the series needs “revitalization” rather than annual releases. We’ve also heard reports that Sony is developing a shooter in the vein of Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell.
