PlayStation Shooters Take Up 40% of PS5, PS4 Play Time
PlayStation shooters take up 40 percent of overall play time on PS5 and PS4. This tidbit was revealed by documents pertaining to the controversial Microsoft Activision acquisition shared by UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Call of Duty and Destiny among most popular PlayStation shooters
Much of the CMA’s document is redacted as it shares sensitive business information not suitable for public consumption, but that hasn’t stopped lookie loos from unearthing gems.
Just yesterday, it was revealed that revenue generated from Call of Duty enables Sony Interactive Entertainment to fund high quality exclusives like God of War. Now, we know that shooters are so popular on PS5 and PS4 that they constitute nearly half of the consoles’ play time.
“We note that two of Activision’s main games on console, Call of Duty and Overwatch, belong to the shooter genre,” reads CMA’s report. “The shooter genre constitutes a significant share of the publishing market, particularly on consoles.”
The report then states that shooters not only make a significant contribution to PlayStation’s overall play time but also its revenue.
Call of Duty and Destiny are mentioned throughout the document. While the former has been a major point of contention surrounding the acquisition, the latter was acquired by Sony when it purchased Bungie.
